Winners of the XXI Shakespeare Competition

Congratulations to the winners of the XXI Shakespeare Competition!

The Anglo Mexican Foundation would like to congratulate the talented winners of this year´s edition:

  • In first place was Natalia E., from the ESN Sunderland school, who won a grant to the British American Drama Academy’s Midsummer Conservatory Program.
  • In second place was Jimena R., from the Centro Educativo Jean Piaget, who won a scholarhip to the American Shakespeare Camp in Virginia, USA.
  • In third place was Pía M., from Instituto Educativo Olinca, who won a grant for an online acting course.
  • Romina T., from the American School Foundation, received an honorable mention for her performance.

On the 30th of March, Anglo Arts celebrated the twenty-first edition of the Shakespeare Competition in the Anglo Arts Centre. This is a key social impact program aimed at high-school students in Mexico and is based on The Foundation’s mission and vision to promote and strengthen artistic and cultural ties between Mexico and the UK.

Throughout almost an entire school year, over 100 students were provided with the basic tools of acting and interpretation. Anglo Arts provided workshops taught by professional Mexican actors and a British theatre director with extensive experience of Shakespeare’s work.

Participants from 18 schools, spread throughout Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Monterrey, Morelos, and Puebla, committed themselves to studying Shakespeare’s texts in order to fully comprehend his language and use of dramatic context in plays and sonnets. They focused intently on the study of his characters, understanding of his plays, and their performance in front of a public audience.

The Grand Final was hosted by professional actresses Geralldy Nájera and Vanessa Marroquín. Seventeen finalists went before a panel of judges that included Lydia Margules, the director of INBA’s Escuela Nacional de Arte Teatral, David Gaitán, stage director and playwright, and Ana González Bello, professional theatre, film, and TV actress.

We are proud to have completed another successful edition of this key social impact program that reinforces our work through art and English language education, developing a sense of community amongst participants and a pedagogic tool for teachers, which all contributes to and enriches the work of The Anglo Mexican Foundation.

Grand Final

“You are going to be the generation that is going to heighten the level of debate in this country and when you raise the level of debate, the exchange of ideas and tolerance is also elevated; that is what we need in these days and age. You are going to be agents of change! If we can influence one person, as somebody said today, that one person will influence other people and that is what the Foundation does.

From the point of view of this institution, congratulations to you all, you reached a very high plateau, and you are going to be influencers as you go through life.  So, thank you for the tremendous effort and many congratulations.”  Anthony McCarthy
